AI slop

Also called slop

Low quality content made with generative AI and put out with little human care or review, such as an article, an image or a block of code. It often looks finished at a glance and turns out to be wrong, empty or something nobody asked for.

In the Machine: Checks stop careless changes before they ship, and most mistakes that get through become new checks.

  • Generative AI

AI that produces new content, such as text, images, audio, video or code, modeled on the data it learned from and usually in response to a prompt.

  • Hallucination

When a model states something false, made up or not supported by its source, such as a citation, a quote or a number that does not exist.

  • Technical debt

The extra work a codebase carries when code ships quicker or rougher than it should: until the code is reworked, every later change costs more, like interest on an unpaid loan.
