Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, analyzing ADP payroll data, found that employment of workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed occupations has fallen roughly 13 to 19 percent relative to their less-exposed peers since late 2022, driven mostly by reduced hiring. Combined with roughly 263,000 tech layoffs in 2023 alone, per Layoffs.fyi's count, it looks catastrophic. Most displaced tech workers have found new work within a few months, though search times lengthened as the layoff cycle wore on, and pay outcomes vary widely. This isn't mass unemployment. It's restructuring. Painful, disorienting restructuring, but not the apocalypse.
History has seen this movie before
ATMs didn't immediately kill bank tellers. Teller jobs kept growing for decades after ATMs arrived, peaking around 2010. Low exposure. Healthcare workers, tradespeople, social workers, teachers, salespeople, emergency responders. AI touches the margins. The core work requires physical presence, complex human interaction, or novel problem-solving that machines can't touch.
What to actually do about it
Map your tasks, not your title. Write down everything you do in a week. Which tasks could AI handle today? Which ones require your judgment, your relationships, your presence? The tasks AI can do are not your value. The tasks it can't are. Know the difference.
Move up the value chain. If AI writes the first draft, your value is the final draft. If it analyzes the data, your value is deciding what to do about it. Be the person who turns AI output into business outcomes.
Develop AI fluency. You don't need to become a machine learning engineer. You need to know how to use AI tools in your domain. "Proficient with AI-assisted workflows" is becoming as expected as "proficient with Microsoft Office" was in 2010.
Double down on human skills. Empathy. Negotiation. Storytelling. Mentorship. Creative problem-solving. These were always valuable. They're now becoming the entire game.
Stay adaptable. The specific tools will keep changing. Your ability to learn and apply new ones to your existing expertise is more durable than any single skill you can name.
